The family is of the Coptic faith and they visit the family tomb. I hope this stirs someones memory, I lost this book some years back and I can not remember the title. Carousel Horse Comes Alive A children's book I read in the s: a carousel horse comes alive and takes a child on an adventure to a magic land but they can only return if the child can find chickweed to feed the horse.
This is the House of Mrs. Mouse s small picturebook of exquisitely dressed mice, beginning "This is the house of Mrs. It is in the Hungarian language and probably dates to just before World War Two. A work of fiction about a Test match between England and Australia, featuring an english batsman and a crisis of confidence nothing changes! The only snippet I can remember from reading this book in the 70's was the main Australian fast bowler was called 'Verlanden' or something similar.
Thanks for any help. The title may have been something like A Naval Adventure - but of that I am very unsure. Little Girl Finds Family of Cloth Dolls A little girl, sent to stay with her great aunt, finds a cloth doll in a nearby store, and chooses it over all of the other "modern" toys. The doll has two "sister" dolls, hidden away on a top shelf, but the little girl eventuallys gets them too, making their family complete.
THE UNIVERSITY SOCIETY
It was light blue not really useful! Her mother had "second sight" as did the young girl. There is also a unicorn on this island that the mother and daughter can communicate with. A young German soldier ends up on the island after crashing on an airplane or sinking with a boat. He and the young girl fall in love. The island is threatened by bombing. The young soldier was "drafted" and was not a "happy camper" being a soldier.
As you can tell I only remember bits and pieces of the story but I was enchanted by it at the time. There was, of course, a moral or lesson I don't remember what it was and would love to find this book again. I loaned my original copy to someone can't remember who that was either! Fairly sure it is an American author but could be English. The thing is it has almost come true for me and my husband. The character s - I think there were two but my husband thinks more - in the story arrive in a little community in a sweet valley - probably in the USA - but we treated it as if in Europe.
The place is just simply lovely and gentle and that's all really. The local food speciality seems to be a sort of cheese which is very nice - though not spectacular. They eat this foodstuff and after the end of their stay find they are unable to leave. It is something in the 'cheese'. We are very keen to find the original story and author. And, yes, we have found a very similar village in a valley and have bought a house there - not where we make our living and we are not telling where!
The illustrations were absolutely striking, alternating each spread between full-colour and outlined, black and white images usually with a coloured page though. I am hoping that my parents still have our copy tucked away somewhere but at least I now know what it is called should I need to order one. I am searching for a book I remember vividly about a bear who ate each member of a family one by one except a little girl who befriended him.
In the end, alas she too was eaten. I seem to recall that the bear was Horace, and the girl was Little Lulu. Needless to say a story like that creates a lasting memory. I signed it out from the library over and over. Does anyone know of this book and where I can find it? When I was about five or six years old ish I had a thick, matte hardcover book of fairy tales that I last saw over half a dozen years ago at our moving sale it had been lost for several years before that.
I thought about keeping it but opted not to, and I'm kind of regretting it now.
I thought I remembered the title but I can't find it on Google, so here's what I remember about it:. Hardcover, matte, with grayish-blue cover IIRC. I can't really remember the cover illustration except that I think there was a castle off in the distance and lots of different fairy tale characters going toward it. I think the colors were kind of muted too, now that I think about it. I'm just guessing here. In the illustrations, Snow White had pigtail braids a la Laura Ingalls. I distinctly remember one of Snow White in the middle of the row of the seven dwarves' beds, as seen from behind and to the right kind of unclear on that part , that was in green.
This was definitely a stand-alone book and not part of an anthology like My Book House which I also had growing up. This was published by Parent's, edited by Augusta Baker, and illustrated by Kurt Werth which is why the artwork looks skilled. A good value, I would say! The Ebay photo looks nice. There are also 5 on abebooks for low prices.

As usual on Abe, the best value for a gift appears to be the book in the middle from Owl's Books, although I don't know them. At the bottom end, not the inexpensive ones on Fair or Good condition not very nice in bookseller terms and, on the top end, not the rip off mass marketer or the business that adds a huge markup for inexperienced buyers.
For most books, always look around the middle of the price range online. It is much easier to judge books on Abebooks than on Amazon, as all but the dollar books sort of follow traditional grading standards. My husband remembers having a set of Grimm's Fairy Tale Books that were the Traditional stories, not the nice ones heard today. The odd thing he remembers is each book had 2 stories, and one was written upside down so you would need to start at the opposite end of the book for the other story.
Any help is appreciated. Dandelion Library published double-sided books. The Companion Library also had double-sided books, but they seem thicker than the Dandelion Library.
