Karl Schlechta, 3 vols Munich: Hanser, — Cahiers de Royaumont Paris: Editions de Minuit, His groundbreaking Nietzsches Werke des Zusammenbruchs was a direct result of this permission. The Nietzsche renaissance in the West was viewed as symptomatic of a restoration of attitudes which had led to fascism. In he contributed an essay to a volume entitled Faschismus-Forschung, in which he repeated the claim that Nietzsche was one of the most influential forerunners of Nazism, argued that renewed interest in Nietzsche in the West amounted to a concerted revisionist campaign, and asserted, moreover, that this revisionism was directed at Marxist-Leninist philosophy: Die Spannweite der Berufung auf Nietzsche reicht heute von den alten und neuen Nazis und den Neokonservativen bis zu den Versuchen einer Synthese von Marx und Nietzsche bei den modernen Revisionisten.

Nietzsche in the GDR Ernst Bloch and Hans Mayer, for example, for whom no philosopher was taboo, did permit free discussion of Nietzsche, albeit behind the closed doors of their seminars at the University of Leipzig. A lengthy history of nineteenth-century German literature, for example, published in , discusses Nietzsche twice in some detail. Even this observation is not allowed to go unqualified, however. Von bis zum Ausgang des Jahrhunderts Berlin: Volk und Wissen, , pp. In a revised and updated form, it was eventually published, but not until the year — by Akademie-Verlag.
It publishes monographs on Nietzsche, as well as Nietzscheforschung, the journal of the Nietzsche-Gesellschaft founded in in Halle.
In Manfred Buhr and others put forward a tentative plan to refurbish and reopen — for Western visitors only — the former Nietzsche Archive building in Weimar. This book is anything but an attempt to praise 54 For further discussion of these developments, see Denis M. Die marxistisch-leninistische Wissenschaft wird darum Nietzsche stets als Gegner 59 behandeln.
A more hopeful note was sounded by Karl-Heinz Hahn, the recently retired director of the Goethe-Schiller Archive, in an article in the volume of Nietzsche-Studien. Not without reason, Hahn devotes only two pages of his essay to the history of the Nietzsche Archive since , but he is guardedly optimistic about the future of Nietzsche studies under socialism. As early as the Nietzsche Archive on the Humboldtstrasse in Weimar was renovated and reopened, with its impressive Jugendstil decor restored.
Unfortunately, the first floor, including the room where Nietzsche died in , had been converted to guest accommodation in the s. Since this foundation has housed 60 Hahn, p. Interest in Nietzsche in eastern Germany today is so vigorous that the Sinn und Form debate less than two decades ago seems to belong to another world.
In a sense, of course, it does. In that other world, antediluvian anti-fascism was the last refuge of Harich and, perhaps, of others. By recreating ancient battle lines and stigmatising Nietzsche as the pre fascist philosopher par excellence, Harich attempted, with some success it must be said, to stifle discussion of approaches to Nietzsche which did not adopt doctrinaire anti-fascism as their first principle.
Such a view would be guilty not only of arrogant hindsight but also of failing to recognise the importance of this episode to a proper understanding both of Marxist -Leninist approaches to Nietzsche in the twentieth century and of efforts to secure a greater degree of openness in the GDR of the s.
