Mission Statement To develop and market the tourist industry so that Jamaica remains the premier Caribbean tourist destination. The Director of Tourism, also appointed by the Minister, is the administrative head of the organisation and is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the JTB. The JTB is responsible for the worldwide tourism marketing and promotion for Jamaica. The Jamaica Tourist Board is the most preferred point of contact for persons travelling to Jamaica.
Throughout the years, the JTB has been recognised for its exceptional leadership and outstanding service with accolades from industry and trade partners both regionally and internationally. The room Constant Spring Hotel was built in , but the real spur to development was the Jamaica International Exhibition planned for In order to house the visitors who were expected to come to the Exhibition, the Jamaica Hotels Law was passed in to encourage hotel construction.
As a result several hotels were built not only for the Exhibition, but for those who, having been introduced to Jamaica, would come again and bring others. Prior to , the industry was not as organised. Available infrastructure was inadequate and much needed services unavailable. There were however, a number of lodging houses and inns which numbered in excess of in Elder Dempster and Company leased the Myrtle Bank and Constant Spring Hotels from the government and immediately began equipping and advertising them.
As a result, there was an increase in the number of visitors to the island. This led to the enactment of another Jamaica Hotels Law in which stipulated that any person erecting a hotel of 40 or more bedrooms could apply to have material brought into the island duty free. The act also exempted persons from increased taxation for 10 years from the date of the import license. The next important milestone came in when the government established the Tourist Trade Development Board, this forerunner of the present Jamaica Tourist Board was amalgamated with the Tourist Trade Development Board in Many people felt that the promotion of the industry was a private concern and ought to be treated as such.
The purpose of this was to obtain funds for the advertising of the Jamaican tourism product abroad and for the general promotion of tourist trade. The inauguration of the Pan Am service in saw Jamaica emerging as a leading destination for visitors. This service continued up to the outbreak of the Second World War.
The growth of tourism is of course limited by the number of people who have the time and money to travel and also by the availability of transport. In these early days most international travel was by steamship, but the dawn of air travel in the s changed all that. During the inter-war period, tourism to Jamaica was increasingly viewed as a tool of economic development and one way of diversifying a predominantly agricultural economy.
The end of World War II truly ushered in the air age and the real beginnings of mass international travel. The stage was set for modern tourism depending as it does on cheap, fast and easy transportation. Between and however, the industry declined. The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association JHTA , responsible for tackling the common problems of hotels and to represent the interests of hoteliers to the tourist board and to the Jamaican government was also established in The number of visitors began to climb again — from , in to , in and nearly , in And once again there was a shortage of accommodation.
The s ushered in a decade of problems for Jamaica. Visitor arrivals continued to grow up to when the country was hit by Hurricane Gilbert. Arrivals continued to increase and by the end of the decade the country had received in excess of one million tourists, more than double the number received in These trends indicated good market prospects for Jamaica and the Caribbean.
Jamaica ended the decade receiving over two million visitors. Increasingly, the government is dependent on tourism to provide the much needed foreign exchange. At the end of , places of accommodation were available to visitors providing over 30, rooms. Maarten and Mexico. The small domeshaped cataracts are usually associated with thermal spring activity found in limestone caves. This, combined with its location near to the sea, gives Dunn's River the distinction of being the only one of its kind in the Caribbean, if not the world. It sadly fell into disrepair, and eventually Chris Blackwell whose. I started to research more, learning that reggae was actually a very popular subcultural entertainment for many Japanese people.
So I built out my goal, looking to excavate the industrial and cultural means by which Jamaican music gains and maintains a foothold in urban Japan. That produced the following two inquiries:. This is a brief history of reggae in Japan, broken down into three eras. Reggae itself originates in Jamaica in the mids, coming out of a blend of other indigenous Jamaican and Caribbean musics like ska, calypso, and rocksteady. Thanks in large part to Island Records and Chris Blackwell, an influential if controversial figure, Bob Marley became the first international reggae superstar, and the first globally successful musician from the Global South.
Marley first plays Japan in —this event was something that all of my interviewers of a certain age remembered. Additionally, many point to two Jamaican films—The Harder they Come by Jimmy Cliff and Rockers, shown here—as important texts for helping reggae spread globally. I interviewed Shizuo Ishii, who acquired the distribution rights for the film and screened it for hundreds of people in a week of showings in Tokyo in The golden age of reggae in Japan was the s, including a large number of Japanese tourists visiting Jamaica.
These trips were often organized by local entrepreneurs who would bring a dozen or so people at a time from Japan to Jamaica. Marvin Sterling is the only major academic who has studied reggae in Japan. His book, shown here, is an ethnographic look at performance practices of reggae and Rastafari in Japan.
Ultimately, he argues that reggae and Rastafari are lenses through which to view a range social identity—such as gender, class, ethnicity, and nationhood—in contemporary Japan. What I wanted to do was to take this theoretical imperative and use it as a way to explore the surprising industrial relationship between the two nations. So the first way I do this is by looking at the materiality of music in Japan. As you see here, the percentages of music purchased digitally versus physically in the United States and Japan is flipped.
Many of these pictures were taken in mainstream stores, but there were also a number of smaller stores selling just reggae vinyl. During my time abroad, one of the things I learned was that the Facebook icon that shows the globe reorients itself based on your location. So rather than showing the Americas, in Japan it showed something that looked more similar to this, which I found on a sign outside of one of the dedicated independent reggae-only shops. This redrawing of the map can be hugely important when we query traditional music industrial arrangements. People point to the collapse of the mainstream music industry as a leveling of the playing field, where independent labels are able to gain a larger foothold than in the past.
We see here that Independent labels have more than a third of the market share in terms of label ownership. The press at Tuff Gong is more or less out of use at this point, and vinyl—once the most culturally important way of accessing music in Jamaica—is in a massive downturn on the island. Artists instead are turning to the web, using Soundcloud and other digital distribution methods to get their music out. But what I want to argue is that there is still a strong market for vinyl, and that this surprisingly strong relationship between the two nations should not be forgotten.
Earlier this summer, a collection of Bunny Wailer songs not released since were unearthed, remastered, and re-released by Dub Store. The speed at which the digital has moved across the world has been striking and impactful, but for Jamaica, it has not been an unquestioned boon.
