Wonderfully creative and funny and encourages kids to not think of ghosts as scary things, a re-framing of a scary image that parents will likely be grateful for. I've been a practising witch for more than twenty years, and one of the things I frequently find most disturbing in children's literature is the outrageous misrepresentation of witches and witchcraft.
So I am thrilled with this book. This book very simply tells the truth of the power and practise of witchcraft. And no, the PC-police don't need to worry, she is not torturing the ghosts. Ghosts who are attached to empty houses are usually stuck and unhappy. Ghosts are often happier when they can have a meaningful role within their home and be appreciated by the living residents.
We can see that these ghosts are happy with their makeovers by their smiles. Part of the witch's craft is to make meaningful connections with local spirits. This witch is using her magic to make a postive transformation. I can't believe I have to explain this, but the content of the more popular reviews for this book here on Goodreads seem to indicate that I do - ghosts don't have physical bodies and cannot be actually harmed by a washing machine. The washing machine shows how witches adapt their domestic environment to their crafting needs.
The sheet is a symbol of the ghost, and so the washing machine is the symbol of its renewal and refreshment. Oct 16, Aylea rated it really liked it Shelves: picture-books , halloween , childrens. Afterwards, they become great curtains, tablecloths, and blankets so that they can all live happily ever after.
This book has a great mix of Halloween fun that combines scariness with sweetness. The illustrations are all orange, black, and white, creating a Halloween feel with the contrast. The text is very simple, but the illustrations make the book more amusing. Some people might have a problem with how the witch transforms the ghosts to suit her needs, but the ghosts look smiling and happy in their new roles.
This book should please even very young Halloween fans. Oct 04, Angie rated it really liked it Shelves: picture. What a lovely little Halloween book to discover at a bookfair just before October.

First of all love the color scheme Perfect for the fall. They have sort of a retro vibe that grownups reading the book might like, too. But we're not talking about grownups liking this book, are we? The little ghost mouths on the curtains and tablecloths will delight the picture book crowd. The little witch and h What a lovely little Halloween book to discover at a bookfair just before October.
The little witch and her cat work so hard to make their new home look like a nice place, and not haunted at all. And of course hope this is not a spoiler! Not a tale of terror, this is a happy haunted book. Pick it up! The simple text corresponds well with each two-page spread. I appreciate the use of standard story constructs "once upon a time" and "they lived happily ever after".
The loss of these constructs in contemporary children's literature reminds me of the rarity of reading nursery rhymes. This gap robs children of an opportunity to participate in the story telling. Listeners love to engage in the story at any point, but especially at the end when they chorally say, "Colorin, colorado, este cuento se ha acabado.

Oct 09, jacky rated it really liked it Shelves: lib-lew , storytime , holidays-seasons , picture-books. I really like this book. First of all the pages are completely orange with thick black lines for the art work. Then, the ghosts are a bright white that is a bit transparent, like tissue paper. The look of this book is very unique. The story worried me a for a moment when we were at story time because Natalie is impressionable about scary things. But, in this story, the witch is not afraid of the ghosts and the ghosts aren't scary at all.
In fact, most of the time the ghosts are smiling. I though I really like this book. I thought it was quite funny how the ghosts are washed and used around the house. With a charming narrative and lovable characters, this story is sure to be a favorite; it definitely belongs on your shelf this Halloween.
