In my teaching, I have always valued the power of interdisciplinary scholarship. In my Arabic classes, for instance, I always seek to ensure that my students are learning the language while continuously being exposed to different aspects of the vibrant cultures in the MENA region. Multidisciplinary, multicultural and multi-institutional collaboration, and the use of ethnography-based research as a teaching tool, constitute the hallmark of my early career, and I will certainly continue this path at Davidson College.

This workshop will explore several different ways Islamic Art can be deployed in the classroom, an overview of major themes in Islamic Art as demonstrated by the Met's amazing collection, and in-depth discussion of how Islamic Art can be deployed in classrooms at all levels, and in subjects as varied as Art, History, Math, and Science.
Teachers will get a guided tour of the Islamic Art gallery catered to the workshop themes led by artist and teacher Deborah Lutz, and an in-depth seminar and pedagogy session with NYU's Pinar Gnepp. Her current drawing series focuses on kinds of vision and vision impairment and she looks forward to expanding the series to include other kinds of perceived losses and their consequent gains.
She received her B. She is a former Fulbright scholar from Turkey and recipient of curatorial fellowships at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her research interests include museum studies, patronage in medieval Islamic Art and Architecture, spatial relationship between objects and architecture within the cross-cultural currents of medieval Anatolia and Iran. The event will be coordinated so that synergies of the two guided tours work to provide an illuminating learning experience.
