Soon scenes can be observed like documentaries of histories of various places. After they asked a question a voice is heard and they begin a communication with a machine who calls itself the "The Guardian of Forever. Suddenly the doctor — still under the influence of the drug — leaps forward, pushes them aside and jumps into the hole in the stone, through the circle, and disappears. At that moment, the Enterprise ceases to exist and the landing party is stranded. The Guardian explains that by McCoy action he went back into Earth's history and changed it.
In consequence their future has been changed. To prevent this Kirk and Spock also need to leap through the hole.

Spock measures the times passing with the tricorder so that they arrive shortly before McCoy arrives hoping they can prevent him from changing the future. Both arrive in New York during the Depression era. Kirk finally comes up with the explanation: His friend had an accident, as a child — his head was caught in a ricepicker in Asia The policeman doesn't buy the story and the two have to run. They find shelter in a basement, where they change clothes the stolen laundry. Spock muses that he has the very moment when the doctor will arrive at this place recorded on his tricorder, but he can't get it out without a computer. Kirk suggests to build one.
