Company of Ghosts is a ghost story for young adults set on a deserted island off the coast of Scotland. The ghost story has a traditional feel to it and is creepy rather than scary, the ghost benevolent and looking for peace.
The Company of Ghosts by Berlie Doherty – Book Review
I liked the spookiness and loved the descriptions of the lonely island etting, although the young heroine was a bit of a wimp on occasion. I'm not the intended type of reader for this genre. Had I read this as a young teenager, I would have enjoyed it much more On occas Company of Ghosts is a ghost story for young adults set on a deserted island off the coast of Scotland. On occasion, the heroine would still have been a wimp. Oct 18, Ekin rated it did not like it.
I was really hoping that this book would turn out to be as amazing as Say Her Name. You need to wait until halfway through the book for the ghost to even come into the book. The plot just seemed to be about a girl who had mummy and daddy issues, who went to an island with a girl's if I remember correctly, who she never spoke to until she tried to run away famly. I liked the style it was written in. But, sometimes I just thought: "ok, enough with the description. Get to the point now". But I feel like this with a lot of authors so I guess that's just my problem. I didn't like, however, the way it was written. Sometimes it felt as if the author was undecided and confused about which perspective she was writing in. This is because when the characters were thinking to themselves, it wasn't written in italics, so it felt like the book was switching narrators from the main character's point of view, to the third person.
Her issues with her parents became very annoying. I felt as if she was being too childish about a situation that happens a lot to a lot of people. Thankfully though, there was some character development, so she seemed to grow up a bit at the end. Especially George. Sometimes I felt as if it was it was too poetic for teenagers to be talking that way. And coming from a teenager herself me , it did not seem realistic enough.
I get it, they're in awe if the island.
The Company of Ghosts Synopsis
But, I don't know anyone who burts out talking like they're writing a piece of description of a setting in a book. I probably didn't explain this well enough. Oh well. After about only a couple of days of being alone on the island, she's already talking to herself. She couldn't hold on for a week without cracking? I thought this was going to be a ghost mystery novel.

But, nothing properly happened with the ghost until the last 50 to pages. And it wasn't even interesting to be honest. I didn't get why, if the ghost needed help, she didn't just ask all the other people who came to the island before Ellie. And I would not have minded, especially in this book. A nice sub-plot would have been great, other than just about Ellie's paintings and the colours she was going to use to paint them. This book actually had a lot of potential. But nothing really happened in it. Hopefully I'll be able to sell this book or return it to get my money back. It wasn't worth it.
But, I'm not saying "don't read it". It just wasn't for me. Maybe other people would like it. Dec 25, Theresa Tomlinson rated it it was amazing. Although aimed at Young Adults, I enjoyed this book very much at the age of 67! I thought I should check it out before passing it onto my granddaughters, but once I'd started reading I couldn't put the book down. There were parts that sent shivers running up and down my spine, but I should have known that you can always trust Berlie Doherty to produce a positive and hopeful ending.

Oct 17, antoanaxo rated it really liked it. Initial thought: I had mixed feelings towards this. I was expecting something that would keep me up at night etc but it was more of a suspense drama. Will talk more in depth on Wednesday. The writing style was absolutely beautiful.
The Company of Ghosts by Berlie Doherty - Book Review - Story Room
The book kind of gave me the Flannan Isle poem vibe and I definitely will be reading the poem again just so I can refer back. The main charcter annoyed me at times and no Initial thought: I had mixed feelings towards this. The main charcter annoyed me at times and not that much really happened. Throughout the book I could feel my connection to Ellie breaking because she was slowly turning insane.
In this book there is a lot of suspense and it takes a while before you realise what's going on. It is a little repetitive but I think that is helpful so that it reminds you a bit of what is going on in case you forgot. I love this book and it is great to read if you like spooky stories or if you want to try something different. I would definitely recommend this book. Compare all 28 new copies.
