Lisbon, and The province became a centre of espionage conducted by several countries, including Japan, China, Great Britain, the United States and Portugal. The peculiar situation of Macao placed some residents in a privileged position to gather information during the war in the region. Mr Braga made a point of collecting information that would later perhaps be considered useful for historical research. The material collected is in the form of newspaper clippings, loose and in albums, correspondence and other manuscript material, newspaper runs, serial runs, and monographs.
The subjects covered include: events foreshadowing World War II; various events and the changing situation during the war in the region; the operations of allied secret-service agencies; the treatment of military prisoners and civilian internees in camps; allied and axis propaganda; relief for and rehabilitation of Macao and Hong Kong; trials of war criminals; and the winding up of allied operations in the region. The material from the Braga Collection on World War II is an important addition to the National Library's holdings, and together with material already held in this subject area, provides resources which should prove to be valuable for research.
